So, some people who turned on Russia look to be a target of assassination


...in the UK. I'm pretty sure this is what Steele was referring to when he said he feared for the lives of some of the contacts used in his memos. Putin takes these people out. This specific case isn't related to our Russia investigation, but it shows how serious this is, and why Steele likely didn't take what he did lightly. He is very familiar with this based on his background.

Again, while this isn't necessarily related, you have to think this is in the back of the minds of Gates/Manafort.
